Bobar 2019 Chardonnay

Bobar Chardonnay has such a distinct expression of Yarra Valley Chardonnay; tasty, powerful and rich, restrained, refreshing and mineral all at once.

Aromas of stonefruit just on the cusp of ripeness, preserved lemon, praline and sourdough bread aromas. The palate is super focussed – textured, long and structured. Pithy acidity gathers the richness around it, forming a core of power and intensity that will slowly unfold with time.

The Nenagh Park vineyard lies immediately below the steepest part of the east facing slopes of the Christmas Hills. A delicious combination of mature vines, full exposure to the east, protection from the west and north and rich grey loam soils allow the development of power and richness with poise and finesse.

Hand harvested and whole bunch pressed immediately after picking, the juice is put straight into a mix of old oak 225L barriques and 300L hogsheads for long and slow ferments that usually last well into the following Spring. In late Spring it was racked and blended, allowed to rest for a month before bottling in December 2019.

The 2019 vintage

The 2018/19 season started with a mild Spring, regular rain and fabulous balanced vine growth. From mid-December summer began in earnest with several hot spells punctuating a dry lead to harvest and mild weather in between. The weather moderated in the final couple of weeks before harvest allowing for a gentle and slow ripening in the final stages. The wines have a beautiful richness and density of flavour counterpointed with a genuine restraint.
